You think regrouting tiles without scraping is complicated? On the contrary. Our system is designed for beginners.
Beautiful living doesn't have to be a luxury. We know how difficult it is to find good tradespeople these days – and how quickly renovation costs can skyrocket. But we also believe: You're capable of more than you think!
Our mission is to give you the tools to upgrade your bathroom or kitchen yourself. No construction work, no stress, and no breaking the bank. With our grout colors, we prove that simple tricks can make a huge difference. Take matters into your own hands (or pick up a brush) and transform your home into your favorite place.
Do you have questions about application, suitability, or durability? Here you will find detailed answers from our experts.
Yes, absolutely. Our grout was specially developed for damp areas. Once it's completely dry (after approximately 24–48 hours), it's waterproof, abrasion-resistant, and resistant to shampoo and soap. You can use it without hesitation in showers, wet rooms, around sinks, or in the kitchen. The sealant creates a water-repellent effect that protects the grout.
Our grout color is optimized for all cement grout lines. Technically, it will also adhere to elastic silicone joints (e.g., in corner joints or at the transition to the bathtub), but we advise against it. Why? Silicone is flexible. If the joint moves, the color can crack. Furthermore, it is extremely difficult to remove from silicone.
Pro tip: Color all cement joints with our set and renew the silicone joints separately with new sanitary silicone in the matching color (e.g. silver grey or white).
Yes, that's one of Cala Casa's strengths. Our paints have extremely high coverage. You can easily paint black or gray grout white – or transform white grout into a modern anthracite. In rare cases (with extreme contrasts), a second coat is necessary, but usually one coat is sufficient.
Yes, our paint is durable and suitable for floor joints. Since floor joints are subject to greater mechanical stress (from walking and vacuuming), proper pre-cleaning is particularly important to ensure the paint bonds perfectly to the substrate. However, we do not recommend it for extremely high-traffic areas (e.g., commercial corridors).
Our paint is optimized for classic cementitious grout (the standard grout in 95% of all homes). Adhesion to epoxy grout can vary, so to be honest: we don't know if it will hold reliably in your case. It's best to do a small test in an inconspicuous area first.
Preparation is key to a long-lasting result. Grease, soap scum, limescale, and dust must be removed so the paint adheres properly. That's why each of our DIY kits includes a special pre-cleaner. Be sure to use it before you begin.
Never simply paint over mold! The mold must first be treated and killed (e.g., with a chlorine-based cleaner or mold remover). Once the grout is clean, mold-free, and dry, Cala Casa paint seals the grout and, thanks to its mold-resistant formula, prevents new growth.
Since we're coating the joints and not painting the entire wall, we're calculating in meters instead of liters. It's unusual, but actually quite simple.
Here's how to find the right amount:
It's difficult to estimate the total length of all grout lines. A rule of thumb is: the smaller your tiles, the more meters of grout you'll have.
To be on the safe side:
Why?
When painting, you inevitably get some paint on the tile edges (which you wipe off later). This amount is often underestimated. Nothing is more annoying than having to stop the project and reorder because of the last two meters.
Our average customers require approximately 50-80 meters for their project.
Bone dry: After about 1–2 hours. This is when you should start cleaning the tiles of paint if you have painted beyond the grout lines.
Walkable/Paintable: After approximately 4–6 hours.
Water resistant (showering): We recommend waiting 24 to 48 hours to allow the paint to fully cure.
Don't panic! That's the ingenious thing about our system: You simply apply the paint liberally to the grout (and of course, a little onto the tile as well). Once the paint has dried, you can easily remove the excess from the tile with water and the rough side of the included sponge.
The paint adheres to the joint because it has soaked into the porous mortar.
Am I allowed to do that as a tenant? In most cases, yes, because painting grout falls under cosmetic repairs. It's comparable to filling holes with wall plugs or painting walls: the only important thing is how you return the apartment.
Because our paint has extremely high coverage, you have complete peace of mind: Should the landlord require the original condition upon move-out, you can easily repaint the grout in a neutral tone. This way, you remain flexible and can still enjoy your dream bathroom.
Yes, we offer a special grout paint remover in our shop that was developed to dissolve the paint.
But beware: Since grout is a porous, absorbent material and every joint has a different structure, we cannot guarantee 100% that the paint can be removed completely without residue in every case.
The use of the remover is therefore at your own risk . We cannot accept any liability for restoring the exact original condition.
In our experience (we conducted 5 of our own tests, in which the paint had been in the cement joint for up to 2 years), the grout paint disappeared from the joint without any residue in all 5 cases using our remover.
If necessary, there is Plan B: repaint the joints in the previous (usually more neutral) color.
Don't worry, you always have a "Plan B". If removal doesn't work without leaving residue or is too much trouble, the easiest way is often to paint over it .
You can simply repaint the grout in a neutral, original color (e.g., white or silver-grey) using Cala Casa when you move out. This provides perfect coverage, is often faster than removing the grout, and leaves you with a clean, freshly renovated bathroom ready for handover.
Many landlords are still unfamiliar with modern grout colors. Here are 3 convincing arguments :
Tip: Show him our before-and-after pictures!
We know that colors can appear differently on screen and that imagination varies from person to person.
We currently do not offer test sets or color charts , as this is a considerable undertaking and has also led to some misuse.
A notice:
To make the color look as realistic as possible, you see the paint splatter as a real photo (brushstroke).
Tip:
To check at home whether the color matches your tiles, we recommend ordering a DIY kit with a small quantity. If you're happy with the result, simply order a larger quantity of the pure color without the kit.
Sustainability is extremely important to us. Our grout colors are water-based, solvent-free, and low-emission . They are manufactured in Germany, guaranteeing short delivery routes. And most importantly: by coloring your grout instead of tearing out your bathroom, you save tons of construction waste.
Welcome to the Cala Casa knowledge base. If you're wondering how to give your bathroom a makeover without spending thousands of euros on a complete renovation, you've come to the right place. Grout is often the neglected detail in interior design, yet it has a significant impact on the overall feel of a room. Whether you want to clean , renew , or change the color of your grout, here you'll find in-depth information on problems such as efflorescence , mold removal, and choosing the right color, including the popular silver-gray grout .
People who think about renewing tile grout often have terrible images in their minds: a loud oscillating tool, dust in every crack of the apartment, and the risk of damaging the expensive tiles when removing the grout .
Why the classic "regrouting of tiles" is often unnecessary
Completely removing the old grout and then re-grouting the tiles is one of the most strenuous DIY tasks. It's necessary when the grout is completely crumbling (structural damage). However, in 90% of cases, the grout itself is still intact, but the surface is unsightly, discolored, or stained.
This is exactly where Cala Casa comes in: renewing joints without scraping them out.
Instead of laboriously removing the old grout, we refinish it. Our special paint penetrates the pores of the cement grout, strengthens the surface, and gives it a new, water-repellent protective layer. This is the modern way to repair tile grout – clean, quick, and effective. If you're planning to renew your old grout without scraping it out, this is the safest and most affordable method for DIYers.
Grout used to be simply "grey" or "white." Today, it's a design statement. If you want to buy grout color , you're faced with a huge selection. One color in particular is currently dominating the trends: silver-grey .
Why everyone wants "silver-grey tile grout":
Other color trends:
Many customers initially search for a grout pen or grout pen . The search queries for "white grout pen ," "grey grout pen," or "anthracite grout pen" are huge. However, disappointment often follows after use.
The comparison: Grout paint vs. grout pen
A tile grout pen usually works like a paint marker or felt-tip pen.
The Cala Casa system is the professional alternative to grout pens . We use a brush. The paint is liquid ("high solid") and fills the pores. Whether you're looking for a replacement for anthracite , black , or beige grout pens – with real grout paint, you'll achieve a result that lasts for years, not just weeks.
Yellowed grout makes the whole bathroom look dirty. Searching for "white grout" or "how to make grout white" is therefore understandable.
Myth: Home remedies can restore white grout
You often read about baking powder, toothpaste, or vinegar.
A very specific technical problem is white, hard crusts on the grout, known as efflorescence in tile joints . It is often seen as efflorescence on tile joints in terraces or in damp basements, but also in bathrooms ( efflorescence in bathroom joints ).
What is it? Moisture migrates through the mortar, dissolves salts and lime, and transports them to the surface. There, the water evaporates, leaving the salt behind as a white crust.
The solution:
Removing mold from grout is an important issue for health. Mold is a fungus that grows deep into the skin.
If your grout is black:
Why is this important? A standard cement grout is porous – a paradise for mold spores. Our grout paint contains high-quality polymers that smooth the grout and make it hydrophobic (water-repellent). If you want to renew your shower grout , this paint ensures that new mold can no longer take hold. Water beads up and rolls off like on a lotus leaf.
The terms "renewing tile joints" and "repairing tile joints" are often confused.
If you have actual holes, you'll first need to repair them with grout (fill them with some grout from the hardware store). However, the new grout will never be exactly the same color as the old (grout colors vary considerably).
The pro trick: Fill the holes (repair tile grout), let it dry, and then paint EVERYTHING with grout paint (paint over grout). This way, the surface looks uniform, and no one will see the repaired areas. That's perfect grout redoing.
The floor is subjected to more wear and tear than the walls. Shoes, vacuum cleaners, and mops all contribute to the damage.
Our paint is abrasion-resistant. If you want to avoid removing tile grout from the floor (which is extremely dusty!), painting is ideal.
Tip: Clean the floor grout thoroughly with a strong degreaser before painting it, as there are often residues of floor care products (wax/soap) on the floor. Choose darker colors for the floor, such as silver-gray, gray, or anthracite grout, as painting grout white on the floor requires a lot of maintenance.
One of the most frequently asked questions: Can silicone sealant be colored?
The honest answer is: No, not permanently. Silicone is elastic and water-repellent. No color will last forever on it.
If you want to renew the grout in your bathroom, proceed as follows:
